MIROS AND TM COLLABORATE TOWARDS SAFER ROAD IN MALAYSIA:
IMPLEMENTATION OF "eCALL MALAYSIA"
In the continuing efforts of the government to ensure the safety of road users in Malaysia, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today signed a Memorandum of Collaboration for the implementation of eCall Malaysia.
This Memorandum of Collaboration was signed by YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of MIROS and YBrs. Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, Chairman of TM. The signing ceremony was witnessed by YB. Dato' Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport Malaysia and YB Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Salleh Said Keruak, Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia. Also present were MIROS Board Members, Senior Officers of the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, MIROS and TM.
The signing of the Memorandum of Collaboration today is not just a form of cooperation between MIROS and TM for the enhancement of road users' safety in Malaysia, but both sides can contribute together towards the creation of the Internet of Things (IOT) to support the aspiration of the National Transformation 2050.
With this collaboration, TM is committed to providing communication infrastructure, developing and managing the Emergency Call Center for eCall Malaysia based on the MERS 999 Emergency Response Call Center monitored by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia. MIROS will ensure smooth implementation by assisting the development of eCall Malaysia standards, policies and policies.
The Malaysian eCall system will be activated when a vehicle equipped with this system is involved in a serious accident. The system can also be manually activated via panic button for an emergency other than an accident. Emergency alerts automatically generated to TM Emergency Response Call Center - MERS 999 and will be routed to the relevant emergency agencies for assistance to incident sites.
Data and information generated from the Malaysian eCall system will be used by MIROS to conduct research and analysis to generate information to draw on improvements to reduce accidents and death rates due to road accidents.
In addition, the eCall Malaysia system also acts as a vehicle anti-theft security device that will act to inform the owner of the vehicle via their registered telephone number if the vehicle is hijacked. This function is an added feature to the eCall system currently being used in other countries.
The system that will improve the post-accident management process will begin adopting and operating voluntarily starting in mid-2018. YB Minister of Transport in his speech hopes that the implementation of eCall Malaysia will be welcomed by all parties, especially car manufacturers to help the government achieve the target to reduce as much as 50% death rate due to road accident by 2020.
About MIROS
The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) was established in 2007 as an agency under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia to serve as a central repository of knowledge and information on road safety. The findings derived from research and evidence- based intervention programmes provide the basis for the formulation of new strategies, legislations, policies, and enforcement measures, governing road safety at the national level. Principally engaged in research, MIROS collaborates closely with local and international government agencies and private bodies to further the cause of road safety, serving as a one-stop centre for the generation and dissemination of road safety information and data.
